The prices are higher than this time last year, and the main reason is fuel cost: retail diesel reached a record high of $5.97 a gallon in early September; this is up more than two dollars from a year ago.
This monthly update covers what changed, how fuel affects your quote, and the practical steps to keep your rate where it should be while the fall booking window opens.
The rates we provide in this post are a snapshot, not a flat constant. The prices hold for a week, and every quote is valid for one week and then our customers know that the market could move and the we may need to re-quote. Car shipping changed this month, in three lines

Market rates are up roughly 15% from last year. A published 2026 industry dataset covering 30 months of completed shipments shows consumer prices up about 14.6% `year over year in the first half of 2026, with carrier pay up about 23%.
The fall car shipping window is open. Snowbird demand into Florida and Arizona starts lifting prices in late September and early October. If your move lands in October or November, the timing math matters as much as the route.
How much does car shipping cost in September 2026?
Distance and type of vehicle remain main factors that form the base car shipping price, with distance being the main variable. Across the market, the spread is wide: a short move can run several times the per-mile cost of a cross-country one, even though the total price doesn’t rise that much. Industry shipment data from the first half of 2026 puts the range at roughly $2 per mile on hauls under 500 miles and around $0.55 per mile on hauls over 2,500 miles. Two things move the number within any of those distance ranges:
Vehicle size. SUVs and pickup trucks now make up the largest share of vehicle moves — over 43% of all shipments in the 2026 industry dataset, versus under 28% for sedans. Bigger vehicles take more carrier space and burn more fuel, so they typically run a few hundred dollars more than a sedan on the same route.
Timing. The same lane, quoted in September and quoted in late October, can be a different price. With Snowbirds season coming and followed by Holiday season, prices will be f;fluctuating across all routes.
What changed this month: fuel is at a record
Diesel is the cost most people never see, and it’s the one that sets the floor for everything else. Carriers burn it on every mile, in every direction, and it typically makes up a larger share of operating cost than the public realizes.
Here’s the current picture from the EIA’s weekly fuel update (released September 9, week ending September 7):
- U.S. average retail diesel is ~$5.97/gallon — a record high in this dataset’s recent range.
- One year ago it was ~$3.77. Two years ago about ~$3.56.
West Coast diesel runs well above the national average — now it is near $7.00/gallon — so almost all routes out of California and the Pacific Northwest carry a heavier fuel base than routes on the East Coast, Midwest or the South and South East.
Fuel doesn’t show up in your quote on the same day it hits the gas station. A price change works its way through the system in stages, and each stage takes a little time. First, the carrier sees it on its own fuel bill. Then that cost feeds into the pay rate the carrier needs to actually dispatch the truck. Only after that does it move into the broader market rate data table that brokers work from — and only then does it reach the number you see on your quote. Add those steps together and the whole lag usually runs about two to three weeks.
That’s the real reason a quote from last month can look noticeably lower than what this week’s fuel numbers would suggest. The older quote isn’t wrong or out of date — it was priced before that fuel change had worked its way through. When you’re comparing quotes, it helps to ask when each one was priced, so you’re not reading a fuel spike into a quote that simply predates it.
Why the market moved in 2026
The price movement this year is real and measurable, not a marketing story. In the 30-month industry dataset mentioned, carrier pay per mile started 2026 only about 9% above the prior year. And then climbed month after month past 14% by March, past 32% by May, and into the mid-30% range by June. Consumer prices moved in the same direction at about two-thirds the speed.
Two forces did most of the work: the fuel run-up described above, and the mix of vehicles on the road (more SUVs, more weight, more trailer space consumed per load).
