Back to school season: Why ship your car?

Back to school season: Why ship your car?

As summer has come to an end, another season has kicked off: the back to school season. College road trips are exciting for first-year students, and especially for those in junior high who are exploring different campuses before choosing their alma mater.

While there are many things that students need to check off their to-do lists, planning the college road trip gets a special focus.

Some students plan the college tour road trip during their Fall break. But remember: once school begins, the fall break will be right around the corner!

If you are among these students, you may already have several ideas regarding the campuses you would like to visit or the activities you would like to engage in. You might even be deciding on the logistics of transportation to college. Below, we’ll share a few helpful tips:

Pick the campuses you would like to visit

Going on a college road trip can be fun and adventurous, but you will not get the best out of it unless you plan ahead. You can start by visiting colleges that your friends or teachers have recommended online. Then you can add more names to your list by searching queries such as “Top 10 universities in the West Coast”, “The best universities in science” etc.

Some questions to consider when you open a university page are:

  • Do they offer your desired major of study?
  • Do they have a wide range of academic classes?
  • How big are the classes?
  • How does the campus look like from the pictures?

A strong piece of advice is to get a general idea of the universities beforehand so that you know what to look for while visiting.

How to plan the travel route?

After having decided on the universities you would like to visit, it is time to plan the logistics. Check the universities’ locations and then determine the order of visiting each campus. To make your trip efficient, don’t skip this step, so you also do not end up going back and forth, spending more fuel and time than you need. One way, for example, would be to first check the colleges closest to you, and then go farther. Yet, this will be a matter of your preference.

Pack smartly

Since you are going to different places, don’t forget to check the weather as the day of departure approaches. Then depending on the variety of climates, think about packing up to two outfits per campus. This will mitigate the risk of packing in short or overpacking.

Also, do not forget to pack some snacks with you. As you may eat your meals in restaurants or at the college canteens, it is always pleasant to have your favorite snack with you.

Arrange your transportation

Well-arranged transportation is key to a comfortable and convenient road trip. Will you travel via car, bus, or plane? If you are flying, then you need to start looking for flight tickets in order to get a good price. If you are traveling by car, then you need to prepare your vehicle accordingly. Are you the one driving, or your parents or friends? Do not forget to prepare the documents needed such as IDs, driver’s license, and your car insurance.

Once in college: Why ship your car?

college road trip and shipping your car

Many students, decide to ship their car for college. Here are some reasons for it:

  • Having your car readily available is convenient. It allows you to get around easily, especially for weekend trips or when visiting home.
  • Having your car shipped instead of driving it may be cheaper, as the gas or maintenance costs are omitted. This is the case especially if your college is far from home. For example, if you live in Boston and plan to study at UCLA.
  • Having your car shipped will give you peace of mind, especially when it comes to potential car problems during the trip.
  • No need to worry about parking on the way to your destination. And once you will have gotten familiar with the campus, you will have found a good parking slot for your car
