The Conundrums of Self-Driving Vehicles

The Conundrums of Self-Driving Vehicles

They know perfectly well that texting and driving don’t go together. You will never see the effect of a beer on their driving skills. And they are never too tired to keep focused on the road. Yet, self-driving vehicles still have a few issues to improve, with the most important one being the ability to foresee what’s coming next.

What the heck is he doing?

Autonomous vehicles are excellent at obeying the rules of the road – they know when to slow down, they follow the traffic lights, they can tell highways from countryside roads. But, there is something they can’t grasp just yet – not everyone is like them.

Precisely speaking, self-driving cars don’t realize that human drivers allow themselves to break the rules on the road. With this being said, autonomous vehicles can’t predict human behavior.

To overcome this problem, engineers are relying on vehicle-to-vehicle communication (V2V). Similarly to the way airplanes avoid each other in the air, cars on the road will have equipment that notifies them of other vehicles’ position, speed, and direction. Thus, a self-driving car will be able to react to other vehicle’s behavior by analyzing specific behavior indicators. Yet, this technique is difficult to implement due to the need for a large number of vehicles with V2V communication.

Equipping other vehicles with V2V communication system will take time and resources before we see the positive effect on the traffic safety. Big brands have united to improve communication between vehicles and are already working on projects that will take us there.

Where the heck am I going?!

Another type of unpredictable events that may “scare” driverless cars are the adverse weather conditions.

When the weather is harsh, drivers find their way on the road by following the lanes. If there’s heavy rain, fog, or snow, that might be hard. For autonomous vehicles, the situation is no different. Their sensors and cameras can’t detect the lanes that are covered in snow.

What do we do? Do we ban autonomous vehicles in places like Chicago during the winter? In days of heavy rains, a puddle on the road might look like a simple black patch, and it can disguise a deep pothole. Dark areas on the road are still not recognizable by autonomous vehicles. And the situation when roads are covered in snow could be a total nightmare.

Because as it turned out, the weather was the primary cause of system failures during tests with self-driving vehicles.

Humans know that sometimes it is better to break the rules to avoid accidents during severe weather conditions. But how do you teach a machine to make this judgment? After all, humans can be quite creative about breaking the rules.

Yet, a machine is programmed never to break the rules. And then, if we do teach autonomous cars to react spontaneously to a situation, how would we know when the machine is making a judgment call to save a life or just having a malfunction?

So there comes the dilemma – teach a machine to act like a human or a human to accept the irregularities of a machine. Where do the two meet?

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions….

Self-driving vehicles are all great on paper – latest technologies, smooth riding experience, the ability for all passengers to enjoy a trip. Yet, safety is not entirely guaranteed.

Most likely computers will never have the thinking abilities of a human brain. They can observe and orient themselves around the environment, sure. But all they do is react to predefined situations from a list of probabilities.

Programmers will have to teach autonomous cars to measure, evaluate, and act on a situation only in the split of a second. How to avoid a pedestrian stepping on the crosswalk in the last minute, or a child jumping in the street to save his ball, or a truck in front of us breaking sharply to avoid a crash?

Software engineers will have to improve computer algorithms to be able to not only observe but also adopt some of the driving tactics that other drivers have. Humans will need to learn how to drive alongside machines as well.

And maybe at the end of this learning process machines will become more like humans. Or humans will become a newer version of machines.

Corsia was highly recommended by a friend in the automobile industry. We needed to transport a cargo van from Seattle to Florida. We contacted Corsia who quickly arranged transport within just a few days. Communication was outstanding! Just a few email confirmations and we were all set. Mike was great and arrived right on time and delivered to Florida on schedule. Tip-avoid the hornets nest of auto brokers on line and just contact Corsia for a truly great experience!

I am very pleased on the service and the communication throughout shipment. Ken was my direct contact and kept me informed along the move The car was picked up and delivered as communicated. I did use a enclosed mover and the driver was also clean cut professional and treated car as his own. I would definitely recommend Corsia again with the experience I have had. Thank you. T

Corsia rep (Elena) was very proactive. Helped ship a car from CA to GA. She checked in with me via email quote and several phone calls to find me the best possible quote for the fastest available service. After several communications, Corsia was able to schedule a vehicle pickup the next day. The driver communicated well, and the vehicle arrived in final destination faster than we expected in perfect condition. I highly recommend using Corsia's reliable, efficient service.

Thanks, Corsia! Pickup was so clean, efficient, and wonderful -- my only recommendation is to make sure you schedule it during the day so you can fully review the car in the daylight. Drop off was equally wonderful, and the whole trip went down without a hitch (pun intended!). Seriously, Corsia delivered my Jeep from CT to California with no issues or bumps in the road!

Corsia Memphis to LA, mid-size SUV. I looked at 4 different companies amd Corsia was the most responsive of them. While being responsive, they were not unduly aggressive: when I indicated that I need to wait a month before making a decision they stopped contacting me and only came back with a reminder when I really needed it. Once I decided to engage Corsia they found me a transport within two days and the car was delivered (from Memphis to LA) in another two days. I had a truly positive experience.

Corsia was an excellent company to work with while I transferred my car across the US. A friend of mine suggested I use them as they had been very organized and trustworthy with her own car. I researched a few different place but decided to go with Corsia and I'm so glad I did! Any questions I had throughout the process they answered quickly and clearly. I would definitely use them again in the future and recommend them for others to use.
