Alaska – America’s last frontier on the edge of civilization. It is the largest U.S. state by area and the 3rd least populous, with less than a million people calling it home. The territory was purchased from the Russian Empire on March 30th of 1867, and only 92 years later, on January 3rd of 1959, gained full statehood.
Alaska is one of the most beautiful and amazing states, but the truth is it’s not for everyone. Winters get brutal with temperatures dropping to 50F in some areas, the sunlight is fleeting, and snowstorms are the norm. In return though, you’ll get a chance to see aurora borealis in all its glory, first hand. You’ll just have to dress properly. In the summer, the temperatures are quite pleasing at 60F – 80F during the daytime. And if you want to experience the longest day ever, make sure to get to Alaska on or before June 21. The sun doesn’t set for 19 hours in Anchorage, 22 in Fairbanks, and 18 in Southeast.
The cost of living in Alaska is higher than in the contiguous 48 states, with housing, healthcare, and transportation particularly pricey. On the bright side, jobs are plentiful. The state’s economy relies heavily on natural resource extraction, shipping, and transportation. The tourism sector has also been on the rise. Alaska doesn’t impose state income tax on its resident, and certain municipalities within the state don’t levy a sales tax. As an extra perk, Alaska pays you to live there. The payout is each year in October.
