Maryland is a small state in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. It takes its name after the English Queen Henrietta Maria of France.
For being such a small state, Maryland played an important part in the U.S. history. To the Free State we owe the birth of the national anthem. Francis Scott Key wrote The Star-Spangled Banner while watching the American flag wave triumphantly above Fort McHenry, signaling the British defeat.
One of the first thirteen colonies, the state is considered the cradle of religious freedom. Maryland also donated the land where Washington D.C. was established.
Today, the state continues to actively participate in the nation’s progress. It has more than 60 federal agencies and is home to over 130,000 federal workers. Aerospace and defense, as well as telecommunications and information technology, are the driving forces behind the state’s economic growth. NASA, Defense Information System Agency, and United States Cyber Command are all headquartered in Maryland. According to researchers, Maryland households are the wealthiest in the country. The state also ranks number one with the most millionaires per capita: 7.87% according to 2017 data.
The state attracts families for its excellent education. Its high schools continuously outperform those of other states in national rankings. Maryland is also home to a number of renowned colleges and universities. The most prominent names include John Hopkins University and the University of Maryland. The latter offers some of the most prestigious engineering programs in the country.
And when in Maryland, you will learn that summer is not summer without crabs. There are not many things that get Marylanders more excited than succulent crab dishes. Some say they are the best in the world.
